TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) ■ Gloaming, Cupidon, Coniston, and Veil arrived in Sydney ui" good order, says the Referee, and Gloaming in particular was very lively. The Referee picks Gloaming to ( beat Eurythmlc up to a mile and a quarter, but over a mile and a half gives preference to the big son of Eudorus. A meeting between two such cl-amprons- as Gloaming and Eurythmlc would create even greater interest than the famous Desert Gold —Gloaming race in the Taranaki Stakes, or the frustrated Biplane—Desert Gold contest at Awapuni. In connection with the above t the records of the two present-day "cracks” , will make interesting reading. Gloaming has ■ scored 31 firsts and 3 seconds, being only once further back, when he fell and was unplaced at Trenthaun. Eurythmlc has won 22 races, • was once third, and four times unplaced. Gloaming’s stakes winnings total £22,558, ana Eurythmlc has \*ept the wolf from his fortunate owner’s door with the respectable tally of £24,772. "Augur” once told a story of a race being run three times at Kilmore, Victoria, a strong Irish centre, where riots were frequent. At last the local torse, Tipperary Boy, won. and that settled it. Early In the proceedings a local magnate, who originally hailed from Cork, gave it forth that "if Tipperary Boy’ don’t have it he’ll run till he do have it.” Doubtless he was a full cousin to tbe Victorian judge, who fell asleep in the box while the race of the day was run. The stewards found him so. They demanded the name of the winner. He straightened up in an instant, and in return asked, “Did Willie Pender have a horse tn the race?” "Yes, no did.” "Then he won it.” The Sydney trainer, F. J. Marsden, has had a wonderful season with the two-year-olds under his care. Furious, by The Welkin, is the star youngster of the stable, and has won £7334 at Randwick alone. Pelaw Main £lBlO, Duke Isinglass £952, and Vodka £354 have also won at Randwick, the quartette taking out £10,450. Place money won by others under Marsden’s charge—Even Song and Master Cagou—bring the total up to £ll,OOO. An interesting table of winners at Randwick during the present season appears in the Referee, and tho principal winning horses are as follows:—Eurythmic £8617, Pershore £5481, Greenstead £5402, Fluency £4747, Poitreal £3238, Beaufort £2405, Braille £2294, and Swift Shot £2022. It is pleasing to New Zealanders to see Pcrshore and Fluency so high up on the scale. Duo will probably be the next New Zealand horse to be sent across to Australia. No doubt the handicappers will take good care of h'.rn in the Melbourne Cup and other big handicaps, but If all goes well with him he should make Eurythmic and the rest gallop in distance w.f.a. events. It will be remembered that Duo put up record time (2.58 4-5) for a mile and three-quarters in the St. Leger. and he beat Sasanof over two miles in the Trentham Gold Cup. F.'.t and well, Duo would beat more than would beat him on the other side. Hector Gray's initial success in the Old Dart was in a decent race, the Ascot Stakes, of 2000 sovs. run over two miles, and his mount, Spearwort, is a son of Spearmint and grandson of old Carbine. Sir H. Cunllffe Owen, who has retained Gray, has a splendid string of horses, and is not afraid to paytop prices in hopes of getting the very best For tis quartette of colts in the Doncaster St. Leger he paid 15,100 guineas as yearlings, top price being paid for Rockroi (Prince Palatine—Rock Garden), who cost him 6500 guineas. At the present time the hard-pushed Massey Government is grabbing everything that Is lying about in an endeavor to keep afloat, and it is not surprising to hear that the Commissioner of Stamps is hitting up the racing clubs for the fractions remaining after dividends are paid out to the nearest "saxpence.” In future, the ultimatum states, "all ti e totalisator money not distributed in accordance with the Gaining Act, 1908, must be paid into the public account.” During the present season two-year-uids have won amongst them £36,510 in stakes in New Zealand. This amount has been spread over elghty-one youngsters, tho progeny of thirty-five sires. Of course, Absurd easily heads the latter list, twelve of his representatives securing £12,685, while Martian Is a poor third, six of his stock having to be content with £4160. Hector Gray kept fit on the trip 'Ome, wo are told, by taking a turn in the stokehold, and the pocket Hercules Is said to have surprised the regular hands by his ability with 'the shovel. All of which Is the usual “guff” ladled out about all notable passengers. King George, when Prince of Wales ; the present Prince of Smiles; "Bill” Massey: “Joe” Ward, and others have done tnese things, and the tale has become commonplace and stereotyped. The winder is that they didn’t sign on right away as stokers, and save the passage money I

Once again John Barleycorn is alleged to have been definitely retired from the turf. During his eight consecutive racing seasons he was saddled up over one hundred times, and won in stakes £5OOO.

Mr. Harold Brown’s horses are said to be alt looking well, and with Arrowsmith, Tractor, Ruatara, Sjibok and others to represent him he should hold a strong hand next season. Tractor qt a beautifully bred horse, using a four-year-old (New Zealand tSnie) by the great Tetrarch, from Gravitation, a sister to William the Third. On breeding Tractor should be a champion, but there is always the fear that when a highly-peciigreed young horse Is allowed to leave England he was not regarded as promising by trainers in that country.

At Glen Innes (Australia) recently, W. H. Wells, whose mount was left at the post, poked a straight left into Starter Hink's face, with the result that Hinks sustained a broken jaw. Wells was found guilty of assault, and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, which sentence was afterwards suspended. Hinks alleged that Wells said that he (Hinks) wasn’t fit to start p!<gs, and then struck him from behind. Evidently they require a Dempsey or a Carpentier to do the starting in the backblocks of 'Stralia, for a Sydney paper cautions would-be barrier experts “to learn to use their hands a bit, and keep in condition !”

The next Melbourne Cup will be worth 8,000 sovs. Amongst the entries received in Sydney fcr the event tvere: —Loyal Irish, Ffinmark, Arch Marella, and Fluency’. The three last, named also figure in the Caulfield Cup, which has been increased to two miles, and tire stakes raised to £6,500. Fluency, Biplane, Aetes and Loyal Irish have been entered for the Epsom Handicap (3,000 sovs.), and Fluency, Arch Marella, Loyal Irish and Fin mark for the Metropolitan Stakes (6,000 sovs.).

A recent cable announced the victory of Syeeonelle in the Moreton Bay Handicap at Brisbane. Syeeonelle is trained by the successful trainer J. Booth, and won the New Handicap at the Queensland T. C. Autumn nieet-’aig on June 3. The same day Booth led in five winners, including his own horse Impeyan (Charlemagne 11—Inipellant), who won the Brisbane Cup, and ran the two miles in 3min. 24 sec., a record for the State.

Mountain God, winner of the Hopetown Steeples at the recent V.R C. itneeting, Is by Mountain King—Demoiselle. Powden and Patches, who was first home in the Norwood Handicap at Adelaide, is by Comedy King from the New Zealand-bred Artillerie, and Hamnos, who scored in the Second Division Handicap at Albion Park Is by Hymethus— Paeon.

According to an exchange, the attempt to save Desert Gold’s sister, Acacia, for ntud purposes lias proved fruitless, and she had to be destroyed. The same writer states that Mr. T. H. Lowry will race again in a b-Vj way next season, and Fred Davis is now handling fcr him a quartette of rising two-year olds. TRey are A colt by Finland—Aurarius, halfsister to Desert Gold; a colt by Finland—War Scare, full brother to Estland and Finmark; a colt by Finland—D’Ora. the latter a full sister to Desert Gold; and a colt by Kilbroney from the imported Symbolism. A northern writer states (hat the recent Great Northern Hurdle Race was the third contested by Fisher. On two previous occasions the son of Maniapoto fell when he appeared to have a royal show of winning, hut this time le made no mistakes and “walked in.” Fisher is rising eleven, and other successful jumpers, Coalition, Mastjr Strownn and Mattock, are tho lame
