EMPIRE THEATRE. MATINEE TO-DAY AT 2 P.M. The matinee to-day at the Empire at 2 p.m. will enable all those admirers of Joe Martin, the famous monkey comedian to thoroughly enjoy thtm- ; selves, for he appears in his big comedy “Goodship Roekin Rye.” Harry Carey, ; idol of millions and star of Western drama, has a role that is particularly ! suited to his talents in ’’Marked Men.” A mixture of comedy and pathos, which he alone knows how to handle so well the story will find an answering ring in the hearts of all those who see it. Peter B. Kyne (author of the original story) made of it a masterpiece Harry Carey, through his sympathetic interpretation ot the chief role, has immortalised it. In this ho is ably assisted by a strong supporting, case, not one of whom is a misfit. The bill includes gazettes and reserves may be secured at Collier's. EVERYBODY'S. LAST DAY OF "THE SILVER KING ” “The Sih-er King,” the Paramount- . Aitcraft-Royalty masterpiece, foaluring Wm. Favershain screens again t »-day at the matinee at 2 p.m.. and finally* tonight. A triumph of the art of th? i screen! This is the verdict of those who have seen the Paramount-Arteraft masterpiece, “The Silver King.” The story of Wilfred Denver, falsely charged with murder, is depicted with a realism that sweeps you off your feet. You forget that the scenes are pictured ones. You sit forward and hold your seat with both hands. Yon don’t want to miss a single detail of the superbly produced motion-drama. Breathless’ and sympathetic, you- sorrow for the young wife; you are ready to rise and cheer when the real murderer is unmasked. The great race scene, the Scotland Yard methods of criminal catching, the terrific train smash, are a marvellous piece of screen art. The bill includes the Pathe special feature, "The Inner Voice,” a stirring tale of the western gold camps, starring E. K. Lincoln. Patrons to this evening’s performance should reserve at Collier’s. THE PEOPLE’S. “THE DAUGHTER • PAYS.” “The Daughter Pays,” the latest Selznick release, commencing at the matinee to-day at 2 p.m., reaches the highwater mark of picture success and artistic quality. Not only is the theme wonderfully interesting and splendidly portrayed, but it enables Elaine Hammerstein to attain heights of emotional acting that places her amongst the big stars of the screen. The story is that of a woman stirred quite out of her i conventional complacency by a sense of 1 strength called into being by a dominating husband. Her girlish illusions ' about “nice’ men vanish in a rude ex- I perience, but she is nevertheless loyal '■ to the harsh man who dominates her; i gratified in the end by self-surrender to him. “Smashing Barriers,” Gazette and Travelog also grace this fine bill. Patrons may reserve at Hoffmann's. THE “VICE-REGALS” AT EMPIRE NEXT WEEK. The “Vice-Regals.” a company of accomplished entertainers, will appear at the Kmnira Thoatra. next itfursda# eve-

ning under the management of G. P Hanna and direction of Victor Beck The party is of the perennially popula type which exists frankly to amusi with a happy combination of and humor, delivered in appropriate quantities, the best possible quality, an< original manner. Several of the com pa:iy were members of the welLremeiu bcred Diggers, who, since they left New Zealand, have been adding to theil laurels in Australia during a most successful season, and have now come to New Zealand with the colleagues whd shared with them the successes of their Australian sojourn. A great fund of humor, a rich contribution of musical talent, and apparently unlimited originality are the qualities which have made them so successful, combined necessarily with a lavish provision of wellchosen humorous and musical items which enables them always to produce a novel programme and sustain an unflagging interest. # Many of their items, including all the sketches in which they are particularly clever, were specially written for them. The fine reputation of the Diggers has been inherited by the “Vice-Regals,” who are careful to maintain it untarnished. Much of the old military flavor, too. is preserved, and those who liked the Diggers, whether in France or later in New Zealand will find every reason to welcome the “ViceRegals” during their coming visit. Patrons are advised to book their seats. The box plan will be available at Collier's on Monday morning.
