THE PACIFIC.
MR. MASSEY’S VIEWS, DESIRE FOR AN AGREEMENT. READY TO SHARE IN DEFENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 23. In an interview, Mr. Massey said that ha could see no reason why there should not bo an agreement or understanding between America and the British Empire, not necessarily on paper. He did not know just how. Perhaps it might be a “Gentleman’s Agreement". America, could probably make a declaration by Congressional resolution. He foresaw great commercial develop* ment in the Pacific, and a statement of policy would facilitate an adjustment of the problems likely to arise. The problem of defence in the Pacific was for New Zealand an Empire problem. The Dominion obtained protection from, and naturally expected to contribute her share to, Empire defence. New Zealand bad contributed in the past, and was prepared in the future to be called on for still larger contributions.
