THE SUGAR CONTRACT.
AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT J POSITION OF JAVA SUGAR,. ’ By Telegraph—-I’rMa AMotiation. Wellington, Last Night. The attention of the Hon. G. J. Ander son (Acting President uf the Board o' Trade) wad drawn to the statement emanating from Dunedin regarding an alleged sugar contract between the Government and the Colonial Sugar Company. • On request for a reply to the statements, Mr. Anderson stated that he was not in a position at present to give the public particulars. The Dunedin statement, he said, evidently came from interested parties, who were trying to draw the Government, but the Minister refused to enter into any explanation at this stage about augur prices. In respect, however, to the importation of sugar from .lava, and the statement made that the Board of Trade had warned at least one firm in Wellington that it was likely to be refused permission to land it, Mr. Anderson said he could give .a an emphatic denial.
Christchurch, June 24. Local merchants have received telegrams from the Board of Trade: “Merchants importing Java sugar do ao at their own risk.”
This ifl interpreted that the Government intends to prohibit the importation of Java* sugar. Merchants state that any prohibition order will be fought. Java sellers are quoting at prices which would enable retailers tq sell at a penny per pound below ths present prices.
