The concert given in the Egmont Club last night by the New Plymouth concert party, which includes the principals of the Courtiers’ Costume Comedy Company, of <; Bran Pie” fame, was a groat success. The club was packed to the doors and became over-crowded, even though comprehensive arrangements had been made for seating accommodation. The special lighting and decorative scheme arranged by the committee, was most effective, while the bountiful supper and solicitous attention of the responsible officials reflected the hospitality that has always characterised the club. The club’s orchestra was in attendance and rendered a number of pleasing selections. The concert party’ dispensed a lengthy and varied programme, every item being roundly applauded and each encored, in some cases the performers having to return again and again to the insistent demands of the audience. The Melody Four met with k particularly appreciative reception, and at the conclusion of the programme the audience was loth to let them go and they returned for a third time to render a final “howl,” which was not only highly amusing but also completely satisfying. GENERAL. Cr. Jackson expresses his intention of giving notice to rescind the motion appointing Mr. Sturrock (of Hawera) as engineer to the Stratford Borough Council, carried at Monday night’s meeting of the council. At a meeting of the Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association hold last night it was decided to drop all functions meanwhile and concentrate on arrangements for a ball to be held on August 4. The statement for the dance recently held was submitted and showed that till expenses had been cleared. The school social to be held in the Town Hall to-morrow night promises to be a very enjoyable function and will no doubt receive the generous patronage that it deserves. The object of the social is to raise funds for the equipment of the new girls’ shelter shed at the school. The music will bo in the hands of Fox’s orchestra. It is requested that provisions for the supper be left at the school till noon to-morrow and at the Town Hall after 2 p.m. Dancing will commence after 9 o’clock, the music being supplied by Mr. C. Fox’s orchestra. Your stationery requirements are well catered for by Wilson Bros., Stratford, who have a comprehensive stock of all office requisites and typew iter supplies. Here are a few good commercial lines: Pilot letter files, 3/6 each; wire document baskets, 4/6 each; desk blotting pads, 4/9 and «/-; first-grade typewriter carbon, foolscap size, 15/- box. Don t forget to call or write. —Advt.
