NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.
A SPLENDID EXHIBITION. SOME FEATURES OF THE SHOW. (From Our Special Reporter.) Palmerston N., June 21. The National Dairy Show was opened here this afternoon, visitors being present from all parts, showing that this show still holds premier place among winter shows in New Zealand. Entries show a slight increase, being 3007, as compared with 2962 the previous year. In some sections there is a falling off, but this is more than compensated for in others. In the dairy produce entries total 279, as compared with 285 -for the previous year, batter showing an increase of 57, whilst cheese shows a decrease of 65. The root classes are very strong, exhibits being present from Hawke’s Bay and the Waikato, but Taranaki is not represented. This is to be regretted, as it is questionable if the prize winners at New Plymouth would have been beaten. Potatoes, which are judged by Mr. G. V. Tate (of Waitara) are also a strong section. Fruit, particularly apples, is very strong, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, Marlborough, and Central Otago being represented. A feature of great interest, to farmers is the remarl ibly comprehensive exhibit by the Agricultural Department, who are making a display on a much larger scale than has been the case since the outbreak of the war. Special pronouncement is given to the value of lucerne as a fodder crop. The arrangements for the show are excellent, the secretary (Mr. W. T. Penny), with his staff, having everything running with perfect smoothness. There is a sprinkling of Taranaki exhibitors in some of the sections. In fancy needlework Mrs. A. Lind (Hawera) scores firsts in table centre and also best exhibit of fancywork limited to six pieces. In photography New Plymouth and Hawera competitors have entered. J. D. Hay (New Plymouth) scores second in landscape, and also in animal life, and third in portrait or figure study. G. Wills (Hawera) receives h.c. for humorous study, and Misses M. King and N. Elliott (Hawera) h.c. for collection of photos by pupils attending any one school. ,
