RAHOTJ. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Bowling Club was held on Thursday, the 16th inst., a large number being present. Mr. A, Chapman was in the chair. The secretary, Mr. M. Hughson, who was unable to be present, sent in his resignation, which was received with regr<... The balance sheet, showing a successful year's working, was adopted. The chairman congratulated the members on the good results. Mr. Chapman was elected president and Mr. Bell secretary for the ensuing year. It was decided to hold a progressive euchre party and dance shortly, and a strong committee was formed to carry out arrangements. The local school football team were quite excited when Saturday morning came with sunshine and a promise of a fine day for their game against Warea on the Recreation Grounds. The local team were successful by 14 to 3. Each boy brought a plate of refreshments and Mrs. Colmer kindly supplied hot tea. Messrs. F. Dawson and H. Kitchenman are on a holiday in the Auckland district, visiting relatives and friends. Mr. F. Chapman is also away. Miss Wright, postmistress of Kati Katl, is spending her holiday here with her parents. The Ball family are leaving the district. They will be much missed from the church, where they were regular attendants. Mr. G. Gibson and his two sons, Alex and Don, also Messrs. Colmer and Green are visiting the Palmerston Show Mr. J. Williamson has gone to Cambridge to see his father, who is very ill. Mr. Buttler intends going to Napier and then north. We are sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Taylor. Her family, viz, Mesdames Arthur and Harry Philllips (Auckland), J. Ward, A. Cave, R. Rookes, N. Pepperil, and Messrs. Eli and Stronge (New Plymouth), will have the syfapathy of .the district in their sad loss. PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Constable Clouston, of Opunake, has been appointed temporarily to the charge of the coastal districts between Tatoraimaka and Oaonui. The social and dance, which eventuated at Oaonui on Friday evening, 10th inst., was In every way satisfactory, and all those who attended had a most enjoyable time. The floor was in good order, tie n.us’e and supper first rate. Considering the adverse weather, the Warea Hall Committee’s fortnightly social and dunce on Thursday night, 16th inst., was satisfactorily attended. A happy evening was spent, all the conditions' necessary to enjoyment were present. The necessity for more accommodation for the travelling public in New Plymouth is becoming more apparent every year, and I am informed that several visitors to town last week had the utmost difficulty in securing beds, and even then some of them had to be content with shake-downs. During race and show weeks it Is only to be expected that the capacity of the hotels and boardinghouses should be over-taxed, but, on the other hand, it must be a sure sign of the popularity of Taranaki’s capital town, when this occurs in normal times, and should certainly be a big inducement to speculators in the building trade to increase their operations. It is up to the Government to (revise some means of increasing the facilities for procuring material, as building operations in boll- town and country are being hung up cy the scarcity of timber and cement. The Premier has the chance of a lifetime in this and other matters for making a name for himself, and fit would seem as if a bold, progressive policy would help in a great measure to secure the increased production we are being continually asked for. That Mr. Coates, Minister of Public Works, is bringing forward, a scheme for the formation of arterial roads of a penmanent nature, will be welcomed by the various cour'y councils, who are at present working on overdrafts, and are more or less 'in a continuous state of impecunlosity. The roads are rapidly becoming worn out, and continual patching is not only expensive, but ineffective. Whatever class of road is favored by tke Minister, whether concrete or tar-sealed, is sure to entail an enormous outlay, but there is little doubt that it will eventually prove a saving, and if the taxation is equalised by a universal tyre tax, ratepayers will have little cause to complain. The latest return in connection with the Opunake Seaside Queen Carnival voting shows that the Maori candidate is leading by close on 4000 votes. The town queen candidate (Mrs. Lyttle) comes second, and the Hibernian queen (Miss Callaghan) takes third position. Now that the end la in sight, considerable interest is being manifested by the different followers. The Maoris in particular are making strenuous efforts to keep their representative a.t the top of the poll. Several visitors to the locality in search of fanms ti e other day were quite surprised at the progress that the dairying Industry is making around these parts. One gentleman, in particular, whose business takes him all over the North Island, expressed the opinion that the land in the district would be hard to beat. A famous and well-known nonagenarian, when asked what he had done to be so well and strong at his age, replied: “I was very careful. I never drank much wine. Five or six glasses at dinner, and the same after dinner, does me, but 1 used to drink punch from six in the morning to six at night.’ A careful fellow, iodwd!
