A cable from Sydney announces the death of Mr. William Kearsley, a member of the Assembly. Mr. E. Guthrie, of New Plymouth, is at present acting-stationmaster at Stratford. Mr. Veale is on holiday. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., leaves for Wellington this morning on business connected with his constituency and expects to be absent for several days.
Mr. A. O. Ross has been elected chairman of directors of the N.Z. Farmers’ Fertilizer Company.
Superintendent J. Dwyer, of the Christchurch Police Force, is retiring shortly from the service. After serving fourteen years in the detective force at Christchurch, Mr. James O’Connor has resigned, in order to enter into private business. Mr. J. B. Clarkson, the well known motoring agent, is somewhat dangerously ill in Sydney. Mr. C. N. Haslam, headmaster of the Petone District High School, has been appointed Inspector of Schools from a good number of applicants. Mr. R. H. Rockel, of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School staff, was granted sick leave for the remainder of the present term by the Board of Governors at last night’s meeting. An extra month’s leave was granted for similar reasons to Mr. F. J. Eggleton.
On Saturday all the flags on the Union Company’s steamers in Wellington were flown at half-mast as a tribute to the late Mr. W L. Newman, of New Plymouth. The late Mr. Newman was for many years the Union Company’s agent at New Plymouth, and at one time was relieving branch manager at Wellington. At last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Board of Governors Mr. L. C. Sladden. tendered his resignation from the chairmanship, owing to business reasons. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services during his term as chairman. The board elected Mr. J. S. Fox, of Okato, to till the vacancy.
Reference to the death of Mr. W. L. Newman was made at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. hr moving that a letter be sent to Mrs. Newman, conveying the Chamber’s sympathy, the president (Mr. E. P. Webster) said that those members who were fortunate enough to have met the late Mr. Newman, either in business or in private life, knew Jinn to be a man of the highest integrity and honor, and by his death the town suffered the loss of an estimable citizen. Some years ago Mr. Newman had been associated with the Chamber and was president in 1901-2. Out of office he also took it keen interest in the work and was able to give some useful information, particularly in regard to shipping. The vote of condolence was earned in the customary manner, members standing in silence.
