BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. A. Large, R. L. Parkin, W. Rumball and V. Griffith. The Stratford Hospital Board wrote asking the Council’s support to a proposal to change the present system of appropriating subsidies and favoring the £ for £ system. The letter was referred to the Taranaki Hospital Board, who replied that they did not favor the flat rate of subsidy inasmuch as that the wealthy boards received the same fate of Government subsidies as the smaller ones. They favored the department’s new system of proportion subsidy.—lt was decided not to agree to the Stratford Board's request. The question of the bad state of Elliot Street was brought forward. Cr. Kibby said the matter needed immediate attention. The majority of the damage was caused by the water channel of Molesworth Street not being in a satisfactory state. The original work proposed at this point was estimated a.t £154. —The work in accordance with the engineer’s original estimate will be carried out. Mrs. Thompson, Belt Road, applied, for a connection of her premises to the borough water main—lt was decided to grant the request in accordance with the borough by-laws. The Ngamotu Domain Board wrote asking for assistance in the matter of forming a fernery at the reserve during the present planting season. The amount asked for was about £2o.—lt was decided that the suggested sum be granted, with the understanding that this was the only subsidy this financial year. The New Plymouth Plunket Society wrote asking the Council to charge their motor car battery free of charge.—lt was decided that in view of a previous resolution the Council could not grant the request.
