CHORAL SOCIETY.
FIRST CONCERT. The New Plymouth Choral Society will make its debut before public in a concert to be given in the Empire’ Theatre on Wednesday, June 29. This organisation was formed as a result of the love of a few 'enthusiasts for the cultivation of a high-class of choral music and their venture has met with most gratifying support, proving that the society is meeting a need that has been much felt in the community. The choir, which has been rehearsing assiduously for the opening concert, will consist of about 70 voices and the programme will show the amount of scope there is for work by a chorus of mixed voices. Selections have been made from Haydn’s oratoria ‘‘Creation,’’ Sir Arthur Sullivan’s “Golden Legend,” and from part-songs and glees by such composers as Elgar, Bishop. Pinsuti and Rossini, which will provide a nicely yaried programme, and the choir may be relied upon to present them in a manner worthy of the class of music within which they fall. For the forthcoming concert the society will Mlye the assistance of Mrs. F. C. Ferry (soprano), ■late of Nelson, Mrs. Stuart Russell (elocutionist), and Miss Constance Leatham (pianiste). The concert will he given under the direction of Mr. R. Laurie Cooper. Tickets are 4s and 3s (no taXj, and seats may be reserved without extra charge. The box plan will open at Collier’s on Friday nex.v, and early booking is advisable as tickets are selling rapidly.
