PACIFIC PEACE.
BRITAIN AND JAPAN. ' ALLIANCE RENEWAL FAVORED. AMERICAN PRESS SUPPORT, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received. June 16, 8 pjn. London, June 15. The Times says it is noteworthy that the United States Government journals to-day publish reasons why the AngloJapanese Alliance should be renewed. These reasons are:— Firstly, it is desirable that Britain should exercise a friendly, moderating influence at Tokio. Secondly, the establishment of the Pacific position would ensure peace. Thirdly, Britain’s influence would be stronger at Tokio to assist in any controversies between Japan, Australia Fourthly, would be strengthened as a bulwark against Bolshevism moving towards the shores of the Western Pacific. Fifthly, the alliance with the great colored race in India proves Britain does not recognise the color bar.—Times Service* CHINA AND JAPAN. ALLEGED EXPLOITATION. AMERICAN DEPUTY ALARMED. Washington, June 15. Representative Britten (Republican) moved a resolution in the House demanding an investigation of the charge of exploitation of China bv Japan with I the silent consent and indirect co-opera- ' tion of Britain. He alleged that 300 million dollars, lent by Britain to Russia, had found its way to Japan and thence to China and was used by Japan to thwart American commercial ambitions in China. This course breaks the traditional American open door policy. Mr. Britten, commenting on the resolution, states that travellers in China immediately became aware that AngloJapanese influences will dominate Chinese commerce and unless the United States protects China the time will come when Americans will be rank outsiders in the commercial, financial and political development of five hundred * million people. While the eyes of the world were turned to Europe Japan was secretly exploiting China to such an extent that it may now be impossible to overtake her ascendancy and control concessions worth millions.— Aus.-N.Z.
