A telegraph linesman named William Lewis Wells met with a serious accident in Fenton Street this morning, as a result of which he was admitted to the Stratford hospital. Wells was working on a ladder attending to the cables when the ladder broke in the centre and he fell heavily to the ground. Wells was lying on the road unconscious for some time before being picked up. He was attended by Dr. Sowerby, and was found to have sustained a fracture of the shoulder blade and to be suffering from severe bruising generally. This evening Wells was reported to be progressing satisfactorily. BLASTING ACCIDENT. As a result of'a blasting accident at Douglas last evening, J. A. Douglas was admitted to the Stratford hospital suffering from a fracture of the left leg, caused by the accidental explosion Of gelignite. Douglas had great difficulty in dragging Irmself along the ground for a distance of about a mile io the road, where assistance was forthcoming. DRUIDS’ LODGE. At the Foresters’ Hall last night there was a large gathering of Druids, visitorfe being present from Patea, Hawera, Eltham and Wellington, the occasion being the half-yearly installation of the officers of the Stratford Lodge. The balance-sheet submitted by the secretary showed the Lodge to be in a very sound position, a large increase in membership also being shown. Three new members were initiated at the meeting, while four more were proposed. At the conclusion of the ordinary Lodge business D.P. Bro. Ramsbottom, of I’atea, installed the following officers for the ensuing term: A.D. Bro. T. C. Fenwick. V.A. Bro. Lowry, secretary Bro. J. W. Jones (re-elected), treasurer Bro. H. Burmister (re-elected), I. G.Bro. W. Ferguson, O.G. Bro. H. Warcup, A.B. Bros. T. Smith and J. Ward, V.A.B. Bros. T. Richardsoiy and T. Bulman.
A lengthy toast list was discussed, including the following: "The King,”; “The Druids,” “The Grand Lodge,” proposed by Bro. E. Fenwick and responded to by D.P. Bro. Ramsbottom and P.D.P. Bro. Whitford; “The Newly-installed Officers,” proposed by Bro. Evans and responded to by Bros. Fenwick and Lowry; “The Visitors,” proposed by Bro. T. Richardson and responded to by several visitors; “Kindred Societies,” proposed by Bro. Jones and responded to by Bros. R. Jamieson and E. Hancock; “The Ladies,” proposed by Bro. Rudkin and responded to by Bros. W. Ferguson and W. Berg; and “The Press,” proposed by Bro. T. Smith and responded to by the representative of the Daily News. During the evening occasion was taken by the D.P. to make presentations, and framed P.D.P. Diploma ‘to Bro. J. W. Jones and a framed P.A. Diploma to Bro. Liddington. Musical items were contributed by Bros. R. Ure, Strong, Fox, Dick, Wilson, Warrander and Aitken. Bros. Fox and Strong being at the piano. To-morrow night the Stratford A. and P. Association hold their first annual ball in the Stratford Town Hall. Provision has been made for the large number of town and country visitors, who will take advantage of the opportunity of having a thoroughly good evening’s enjoyment. The floor is reported to be in splendid order ma Y re V on having their requirements and comfort well attended to.
