Miss A. B. Smith, late N.Z.A.N.S., is acting sub-matron of the New Plymouth Hospital, vice Sister Muir, who is on sick leave.

The resignation of Constable Tios. Liston, who has been stationed at Kaponga for several years, has been received by the inspector of the Taranaki police district. At the recent university examinations Miss M. Whiteside, whose parents reside at Inglewood, passed in materia medica, and completed the second professional examination in dental surgery. It is understood that Mr. F. T. Redman, of Masterton, and his son, Mr. Charles Redman, are taking over the Manaia Witness.

An application from Miss Dorothy E. Nixon, New Plymouth, to be placed on the probationers’ list was approved by the Taranaki Hospital Board at yesterday’s meeting. At yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board the matron’s report stated that Nurse Paynter had resigned her position as staff nurse. Nurse McManus had been granted three months’ leave of absence, owing to ill health. The death occurred at Wellington on Tuesday evening of Mr. Archibald Bruce Thomson, for many years assistant librarian of the Parliamentary Library. Mr Thomson, who was 72 years of age, had been in bad health for some time past, and retired on superannuation several years ago. Born in Scotland, the son of Mr. David Thomson, consulting engineer, he came to New Zealand many years ago, and was for some time headmaster of the Greymouth School, later moving to Napier. He -is survived by a widow and four sons: Messrs. A. J. S. Thomson (Napier), F. D. Thomson (private secretary to the Prime Minister, at present in England), H. D. Thomson (Under-Secretary for Immigration), and A. M. Thomson (Bank of New Zealand. Wellington,.and formerly of Hawera).
