THIRD DAY’S PLAY.
ENGLAND ALL OUT FOR 2S3_. AUSTRALIA. WANTS 129. ONE WICKET FOR 103. Received June 14, 11 p.m. London, June 14. The cricket was resumed to-day, when the sky was overcast and the wicket unchanged. The attendance was small. Macdonald and Gregory bowled against the not-out men, Tennyson and Strudwick. The score at 11.20 a.m. was 9 wickets for 263 runs (Tennyson, 58; Strudwick, bowled Gregory, 12). ■Received June 14, 11.45 p.m. London, June 14. England’s innings closed for 283. Scores: Tennyson, not out .......u74 Duraton, b Gregory 2. Extras 12 Bowling analysis.—Gregory took four wickets for 76 runs; Macdonald, four for 89; Armstrong, none for 19; Hendry, 0 for 15; Mailey, 2 for 72. The wickets fell as follows: 1 for 3; 2 for 97; 3 for 124; 4 for 165; 5 for 165; 6 for 198; 7 for 202; 8 for 235; ft for 263; 10 for 283. Tennyson batted 105 minutes. His score included ten fours.
Requiring 129 to win, Bardsley and Andrews opened second innings against the bowling of Durston and Douglas. Armstrong entrusted the winding-up of England’s innings to the fast bowlers. Macdonald, at the pavilion end, breezed Strudwick’s bails with his third ball. Tennyson, though frequently mistiming Macdonald, executed useful strokes, bringing up his fifty with a sparkling leg boundary at the Victorian’s expense and making the total 250, which had taken 245 minutes. Fortunately for England Tennyson got most of the bowling, and on passing his fifty he treated Macdonald lightly, driving him to the off and pulling boundaries. Gregory broke the partnership with a fast ball, sending the wicket-keeper’s off stump yards behind, Strudwick having pulled him to the ropes in the previous ball. Tennyson was unhappy facing Gregory, but cut a riser past deep third man, and hit through covers several times. He managed to keep most of the bowling from Durston, whom Mailey dropped in an attempt at a backward catch at point when the score was 265. Tennyson showed admirable enterprise, ensuring his getting the bowling over after over. He would follow a boundary drive with a single off the last ball. Thus the score mounted rapidly, fortyeight appearing in forty minutes; but these tactics could not last. Durston eventually faced Gregory, who rooted out his leg stump with his second ball. The Australians, at 12.30 p.m., had lost none for thirty (Bardsley Ift; Andrews nine). Received June 15, 1.25 a.m. London, June 14. At the end of an hour’s batting Bardsley had made 37 and Andrews 43, and the total was 85. A quarter of an hour later Parkin got Andrews leg before. The retiring batsman made 4ft. The total was 103 (Bardsley 48 not out) for one wicket.
