ESTIMATES FOR THE COMING YEAR. At Saturday’s meeting of the Eltham County Council estimates of the expenditure for the coining year were presented for consideration and adoption. The following are extracts of the figures for the various ridings: i South Riding: Debit balance, April 1, £2626 Ils 9d, expenditure. £2200, total £4826 Ils 9d; general rates £2414 0s 6d; debit at March 31, 1922, £2412 Ils Mangatoki Riding: Debit balance, April 1, £1944 6s ' 4d; expenditure, £3250; total, £7294 6s 4d; rates, £4399 0s Id; debit at March 31, 1922, £2895 6s 3d. Omoana Riding: Debit balance, April 1. £2115 Is; expenditure, £1500; total. £3615 l<s; rates, £1640 19s; debit at March 31, 1922, £1974 2s. Kaponga Riding: Debit balance at April 1, £932 17s lid; expenditure, £2700; total, £3032 17s lid; rates, £1712 Os lOd; debit at March 31, 1922, £1920 17s .Id. Eltham Riding: Debit balance, April 1, £lO9O 10s (id; expenditure, £2950; total. £4940 10s (id; rates, £3501 14s; debit at March 31, 1922, £1438 16s fid. During the discussion of the estimated works for the ensuing year it was decided to leave the question of the reduction of the staff in the Omoana .Riding from five men to four to the riding member and the. engineer. Cr. McGuinness said expenditure in the Manga-toki Riding was very heavy, and would almost necessitate an increase of the rate. The chairman suggested that this might be avoided by leaving the tarsealing of the Duthie Road—which would cost £looo—until March, when the expenditure could go into the following V This proposal proved acceptable to the riding members.

In reply to questions the chairman said he thought he had made it clear that the rates had been struck on the old valuation. The now valuation was not yet in force. The estimates were then adopted
