THE BUTTER DEAL.

EXPORTABLE SURPLUS DEFINED. V By Telegraph-Tress Assn.—Copyricht. Christchurch, June 11. The Hon. W. Nos worthy informed Mr. McCombs that the Government communicated with the Imperial authorities with regard to the re-purchase of butter for consumption in New Zealand, and received a definite reply that it was not proposed to sell the butter from Imperial stock at a loss for local consumption. Mr. Noe worthy points out that the contract for sale to the Imperial Government was for the exportable surplus, and the Imperial Government takes the view that if any butter taken into stock in New Zealand on its account is required for home consumption it cannot be regarded as exportable surplus.
