SAVAGE KORERO.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. # INSTALLATION OF CHIEF SAVAGE. The first korero of the New Plymouth Savage Club, held on Saturday night, was a most successful function. The installation of the chief savage (Mr. C. H. Weston) was the most important part of the proceedings. The scope and nature of his duties and privileges were duly set out in an imposing scroll, which was read by the chairman of committees (Mr. W. H. Robertshaw), to which the chief savage gave his solemn assent. He was then invested with the necklace and the “bone” of the tribe. He then welcomed Ithe representative of 'the 'Wellington Tribe (Mr. A. W. Newton), who had made a special journey to New Plymouth for the purpose of expressing the goodwill of an older tribe towards the new hapu in New Plymouth. Mr. Newton thanked the New Plymouth club for its cordial welcome to him as a visitor from another club, and assured members of the New Plymouth Club that they would be welcome at any of the Wellington koreros. He explained the principles under which the Wellington Club was conducted, and congratulated the New Plymouth hapu on the promising start it had made, and especially upon the large attendance that evening. Two choruses of welcome to the chief savage were rendered. The orchestra was greatly appreciated, and an excellent programme of music, songs, monologues, sketches and good -stories completed a most successful evening.
