MISHAP TO S.S. HAWERA.
WHILST ENTERING PATEA RIVER. A mishap occurred to the s.s. Hawera as she was entering Patea at noon on Thursday with a cargo of cement. There was a very heavy sea running at the time and just as the vessel entered the river a huge sea caught her and dashed her against the eastern wall, crushing her starboard side somewhat badly. The vessel commenced to leak and' the ship’s pumps were at once got to work, and later when she arrived at the wharf the assistance of the dredge Wallace was obtained, with the result that the water was soon got under control, whilst the cargo was unloaded. Later the vessel was beached on the river bank, where it will be repaired prior to going on the slip at Wellington. Very little of the cargo was damaged, thanks to the work of the ship’s pumps and that of the dredge, which again proved its value to the port.— Press.
