MOUNT EGMONT QUARRIES.
GOVERNMENT PUSHING ON WITH THE WORK. Mr. O. Hawken, M.P., states that in conversation with the Minister of Public Works about the Mount Egmont quarry he found that the Government is going to push on with this work. They have an officer of the department at Home now getting machinery, etc., for the railways, and he has the plans, etc., for the machinery required for the quarry. No cables have been received about this particular machinery, but such are expected at any time. As showing the necessity for a regular supply of stone in the district, the Railway Department have the greatest difficulty in getting suitable stone for ballasting, so much so that they are thinking of bringing stone all the way from Wellington for the ballasting of the new To Roti-Manaia line. It takes about 20 yards of ballasting per chain, or 1600 yards a mile, and would therefore take 16,000 yards for this one job. No doubt, says Mr. Hawken, from every point of view, it is most urgent that this quarry should be opened.—Star.
