FIRES.
BLAZE AT PALMERSTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, June 7. A fire early this morning seriousry damaged a two-storied brick building in the Square, known as Cole’s Buildings. The ground floor was occupied by Cole’s Music Shop, and other portions were occupied by the Salvation Army, Repatriation tauehlan (jeweellers), Small (dentist). Holmes, Runnicies (pianoforte tutor), Mrs. Swanson (dressmaker), Raffles (violin tutor), Price (artist), and Theosophical Society. The office of the Repatriation Department was completely gutted, also Lauehlan’s shop, situated above it. Wycherley’s saddlery workshop, adjoining, was also damaged. The rooms and fittings of the Salvation Army were damaged by flames and water, the other rooms by water only. A BOARDING-HOUSE BURNED. Ashburton, June 7. A large wooden boarding-house was completely destroyed by fire this morning. It was occupied by Mrs. Bain and her four daughters, who, with eight boarders, escaped in night attire. Practically all the effects and furniture were lost. The insurance on the house, in the New Zealand Office, was £B5O, and on the furniture, in the Liverpool, London and Globe, £4OO.
