Stratford on Saturday evening,. a fair number of members being present. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president (Mr. A. W. Budge) stated that the society was in a flourishing condition and the work carried out during the year compared very favorably with previous years. The balance-sheet disclosed a balance of £l5 17s 7d, and the assets over liabilities amounted to £B2 I’7s'. 6d. Unfortunately poaching put a cheek on the society’s efforts on behalf of sportsmen, but notwithstanding the difficulty of getting convictions against poachers, the society would not relax its endeavors to bring poachers of fish and game to book. Reports from shooters were not too encouraging, but he hoped the society would be. able to improve matters before next season.
Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, in seconding, said he considered that the financial position was quite as good as in past years, while fish were fairly plentiful and pheasants were reported to be holding their own in the rough country in the eastern part of the district. While there were a number of quail in the district they were fast disappearing and it would be. necessary for the society to introduce other game birds that Would be suitable to acclimatise under the altered conditions in Taranaki. Most of the bush having been felled the cover which is necessary for both pheasants and quail had disappeared and it would seem desirable to introduce game birds that would do well in wet or swampy country. .Snipe do particularly well in this class or country, but it had been found impossible to introduce snipe into New Zealand in numbers sufficient for acclimatisation purposes, on account of these birds not standing the sea voyage well from the countries where they breed. In the matter of introducing
new game he thought their only course now would be to work in with other societies in the Dominion with the object of co-operative importation of suitable birds. During the year the executive had endeavored to purchase pheasants, but the prohibitive price of £3 per pair was asked. lie believed if new blood was introduced amongst the pheasants in the rough country the birds would increase and thrive, and if possible to purchase the birds at a reasonable price a number should be obtained. SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Stratford School Committees’ Association was held on Saturday. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., occupied the chair. In moving the adoption of the report. Mr. W. Pinhey, president., said the matter of medical inspection at country schools should be agitated at the Taranaki conference. He would like to see a good turn-out of delegates from all schools at the conference. There were 31 schools affiliated to the association, but only ten had paid the affiliation fee. He hoped the schools in arrear would pay up, as the association could not carry on otherwise. Discussing the question of capitation, the chairman said several committees had big credit balance and this was a disadvantage when an increased capitation grant was asked for. Committees who had credit balances should see that they were spent—that was what the money was for. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. W. Pinhey; secretary, Mr. E. Marfell; executive, Mesdames Cuthbert and Kemp, Messrs. Kemp and Pitcaitlily.
