BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. GENERAL BUSINESS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. A. Large, J. Brown, W. Rumball, and V. Griffiths. An apology for absence was received from Cr. R. L. Parkin. The superintendent of the New Plymouth Fire Board reported on the fire escape conditions of the grandstands at the racecourse. He specified that on the occasion of any amusement taking place there three firemen, at a salary of £1 per day, be placed on duty there, and that no obstruction be placed in the aisles. The borough manager reported that a license could not be issued without the permission of the Fire Board. — The report was received. Messrs. Standish and Anderson wrote on behalf of Mr. R. D. Colson, requesting that section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1908, should not apply to those parts of Pendarves, Liardet, and Gilbert Streets which form the frontage of sections 1030, 1049, 1050, and part of 1051, owned by Mr. Colson. — The borough engineer’s recommendation that the request bo granted, subject to the usual by-law conditions, was adopt, ed. Messrs Govett, Quilliam and Hutchen wrote making a similar request on behalf pf a native named Kararaima Paraone Heke, who owns a section on Bayly Road. —The- engineer recommended the council to refuse the request, on the grounds that Bayly Road would shortly be an important area. The application was refused. A petition signed by eight residents of Cutfield Street was presented urging that something be done to repair the footpath in that street. —It was decided that the council could do no further work in this area. Mr. W. G. Bethell was appointed borough foreman at a salary of per week. Mr. John O’Grady wrote applying for an extension of the water supply to his place in Dorset Avenue, and suggesting that a gin. or Lin. pipe be taken direct from the 4in. main. There were five houses in the avenue requiring connections to the water main.—The Mayor said that at present nothing could be done in this respect as the finances of the council would not permit. Messrs. R. H. Sole and Roberts waited on the council on behalf of the blacksmiths of New Plymouth, objecting to the demand of the council for asphalted yards on blacksmith premises. —lt was decided that the by-law be suspended providing the yards- were kept
