DESIRE TO GO TO FIJI. TROUBLE IN ASSAM. By Teleaisph.*-»pr©ss Assn —Copyright Received Jtaae Q, 8.15 pan. Delhi, June & JBhe Indian Emigrants Friendly Service Committee : s issuing an appeal for assistance for Indians from Fiji who visited India and desire to return to their homes in the Colonies. Magiy are colonial born and unable to maintain the struggle for existence under Indian conditions. They spent their savings while waiting for ships and now are destitute and half staYved.
It is also proposed to help 6000 coolies who left the tea gardens at Assam and went to Chandpur under £he impression that a steamer had been chartered by Gandhi to take them to their homes in Central India. They are now stranded and penniless and cholera has broken out amongst them. An attempt to remove them to more sanitary surroundings led to a conflict between the .Ghurka military police and the refugees. One report states there were thirty minor casualties. Other statements are to the effect that the casualties are more serious. Non-co-operators declare that the exodus from Assam is due to economic conditions, while the tea planters claim it. is the outcome of propaganda by Gandhi and other extremists.—Reuter Service.
