WOMEN MAGISTRATES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. > Sydney, June 2. A big batch of new Justices of the Reade includes the names of 58 women, the first women appointed. Among them is the wife of the Minister of Motherhood.
SHIPPING FREIGHTS IRREDUCIBLE. Sydney, June 2. Shipowners have issued a statement tlmt a further reduction of freights is impossible and that the ships would be laid up if the existing rates prevented business.
NIAGARA QUARANTINED. Sydney, June 2. Owing to a suspected case of smallpox on the Niagara the vessel has been quarantined. The patient is a lady passenger from Vancouver. The passengers were recently successfully vaccinated and will released on Thursday.
THE 44-HOUR WEEK. Sj’dney, June 2. Evidence given before the Industrial Court shows that the reduction of wages through the reduction of the working hours to 44 is overcome by payment for four hours extra overtime. For instance, boiler-makers under the 4S-hours week received £5 19s and under the new arrangement £6 10s.
