AN IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 2, 8.55 p.m. Washington, June 1. The Supreme Court has decided that the Volstead prohibition law has supplanted the former internal revenue laws, and the old penalties for revenue taxation could not be applied in addition to the penalties under the Volstead Act. The manufacture of illegal liquor can be taxed, but the penalties for defrauding the Government must not apply. .Twenty-five million dollars are involved in the decision. Dry agents admit it is a very hard blow to the enforcement of the prohibition law. • Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
