AMERICAN MARINE STRIKE.

A SETTLEMENT PREVENTED. INCENDIARISM ATTRIBUTED TO STRIKERS. By Talegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. New York, Juhe 1. The marine engineers’ demands for the reinstatement of the men who have left the ships has prevented the settlement of the strike just as the agreement with the Shipping Board was near completion. Private owners still refuse to accept the Labor Department’s mediation proposal, which includes the signing of an agreement maintaining the present wages for one year. Investigations have been started into the cause of the fires which have broken out on several liners affected by the marine strike, following the blaze on board the liner President. Wilson,, which did damage to the extent of 50,000 dollars. -The similarity of this fire to that on board the Panhandle State leads owners to think that the strikers were responsible.—Aus.-N.Z.
