WOMAN “SHOP-LIFTER”. Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A woman'who admitted “shop-lifting” extending over several months was admitted to probation for five years by Mr. Poynton, S.M., and ordered to restore the value of the goods stolen—about £l56 —within six months.
LIQUOR AFTER HOURS. Te Awamutu, Last Night. The license for the Te Awamutu Hotel was endorsed by Mr. A. Young, S.M., and a fine of £5 was imposed for serving liquor after hours. The police said the hotel was generally very well kept.
RESIDENCE BURNED. Pahiatua, Last Night. An eight-roomed residence at Nireaha, owned and occupied by Mr. W. D. Burpess, was totally destroyed with contents by fire. The insurance is £9OO in the Wellington Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Office.
ENGINE-DRIVER’S DEATH. Auckland, June 2. At the coroners inquest .into t-hse death of George Percy Wallace by the capsize of the engine of which he was driver at the railway station, evidence was given that, as the engine was proceeding over the turntable, the gauge glass blew out, the cab was filled with steam, and the engine ran right into the pit, the points not having been set. The inquest is proceeding.
