VOLUNTARY HOSPITALS.
HEAVY LOSSES IN ENGLAND. THE SYSTEM ENDANGERED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received June 2, 5.5 p.m. London, June 1. Owng to hgh prices seventy-one London hospitals out of 113 have deficits aggregating £599,000, while 248 provincial hospitals out of 452 have deficiencies amounting to £501,000. A committee under Lord Cave, who investigated the problem, propose that the State should make an immediate grant of £1,000,000. They also suggest that the Courts be empowered to award hospitals compensation under the Workmen’s Compensation Act. The committee state that the whole voluntary hospitals system is endangered. Many hospitals are losing £lOOO weekly and hundreds of beds are being closed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
