PRODUCERS’ SHIPS.
SUPPORT OF FARMERS URGED. The movement for establishing a farmers’ co-operative shipping service was referred to by Mr. J. R. Richards, president of the Stratford, Chamber of Commerce, at the Jersey breeders’ smoke concert at Stratford on Tuesday night. Mr. Richards said that in 1916 New Zealand had a splendid opportunity for engaging in the shipping business, but that opportunity was allowed to pass, until now there had been a recrudescence of the movement, headed by Mr. Bernard Tripp. Mr. Richards hoped that that movement would meet with every success and he hoped the men engaged in the dairy industry would give it their support.
Mr. R. Masters, M.P., expressed the hope that the farmers of Taranaki, in common with the farmers of every other district, would do their utmost to see that a co-operative system of shipping was brought about, under which the farmers would not suffer under the same disadvantages that confronted them at present. Australia had led the way in this respect and its shipping service had been a wonderful success. Canada also had established its own shipping lines and New Zealand could very well follow the lead of those two countries without going far wrong.
