ALLEGED WITCHCRAFT.

‘PROFESSOR” HOWARD AND MADAME RANEE ARRESTED.

’ Under an ancient statute aiming at the suppression of witchcraft, “Professor” (sometimes styled Bishop) John Howard and Madame Ranee, “teachers and demonstrators of Theomonism, human character and psychology,” were arrested at Wellington on Monday by Detectives Andrews and Black. Yesterday Howard and Madame Ranee were to appear in the Magistrate’s Court jointly charged that “on May 2b they did pretend to exercise witchcraft, that kind of witchcraft designated spiritualism; otherwise undertaking to tell fortunes with intent to impose upon and deceive His Majesty’s subjects.” The “Professor” is described in the charge sheet as one Isaac Haddon Hunter, alias John Howard, alias Henry Hunter. He is about 45 years of age, a native of Australia, and at one time followed the occupation of a carpenter. Madame Ranee is described as a Rumanian. *
