The Hon. Dr. Collins will visit Plymouth on June 16 in tonnectioif with Red Cross work.

A London cablegram states that Mr. W. M. Hughes will take over the duties of High Commissioner for Australia on June 11.

A telegram from Wanganui reports the death of Mr. H. V. Hammond, a well-known settler, and president of the Agricultural Association, aged 57. A Press Association telegram from Auckland reports the death of Mr. Lionel N. Benjamin, Auckland manager for Messrs. P. Hayman and Co., aged 69 years.

Mr. G. Dransfield, for several years manager of the Bank of Australasia at Te Aroha, will retire at the end of thia month superannuation.

The Patea Press understands a move« ment is on foot to make a presentation to Mr. w Morrison, who has contested the Patea se.it io the Liberal interests on several o?easions. There has just passed away another* old Maori war veteran in the person of Veteran T. Kinsella. The deceased was a member of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, and arrived in Auckland with that regiment on July 4, 1863. He was on active service in the Waikato and Wanganui districts from the above Ute until 1869. On the regiment leaving fqr England early in 1870, he took his discharge and settled in the Wanganui district.

A social afternoon was held by the New Plymouth Victoria League yesterday afternoon to welcome Miss Birch (travelling secretary of the Y.W.C.A.), Miss Mclntosh (the new principal of the Girls’ High School), Mrs. Orr Walker (wife of the new magistrate), and Mrs. Devore (a member of the Auckland branch). The guests were welcomed by the president (Mrs. C. H. Burgess) and responses were made by Misses Bircfh and Mclntosh. Members also farewelled Mrs. T. A. B. Bailey, who is leaving for Wanganui. A number of musical items were given during the afternoon, those contributing being Miss O. Shaw, Mrs. R. Fraser, and Miss Home.
