The Dunedin Jockey Club opened its winter meeting to-day in dull but fine weather and before a large attendance. The course was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £28,1.14 10s, compared with £24,498 on the first day last j?ear. Results:— TRIAL HURDLES HANDICAP.—WiId • Pilgrim (McHenhessy) 1, Staff Officer 2, Banza 3. BIRTHDAY HANDICAP.—Rorke’s Drift (Ftnerson) 1, Mazama 2. Clean Sweep 3. Also started: Kilkee, Tin Soldier, Jock. Dutch Courage, Hard Hit, Caverock, Night Alarm. YVon by a short length, a neck between second and third. Jock was fourth. Time, 2min 34.3-ssec.
OTAGO STEEPLECHASE.—GoIden Prince (Humphries) 1, Glenlslu. 2, Manawapcnga 3. Also started: Lawsuit, San Sebastian, Silverspire, Zarkoma. Won by three lengths, twenty lengths between second and third. Zarkoma was the only other finisher. Time, Grain. 19 l-ssec.
TRADESMEN’S HANDICAP—Miss Muriel (Andrews) 1, Pyjama 2, Corn Rigs 3. Also started: Radial, Kiilowen, Eight Bells, Mantua, Jazz, Borodino, Sleepy Head, Link Up. Won by a long neck, a length and a half between second and third. Link Up was fourth. Time, imiu. 15 l-ssec.
HACK STEEPLES— Llugi (O’Connor) 1, Wicklow 2. Also started: Golden Link. As both Golden Link and Wicklow fell, Liugi cantered home. Wicklow was re-mounted, and after falling !.ntc the water jump, was ridden home for second money.
