AUCKLAND MEETING. RACE IN TWO DIVISIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Jervois Handicap will be run in two divisions, the following being the First Division :—Sir Huon, Persian King, Pavo, Nuncrrant. Bright Light, Pure Laziness, Memlnce, Boomerday, Contois, Paonui, Lord -".nice, litehall, Pagoda, Milesian, Fencer, Tyroe, Olga Petrova, Grab, Reretoa. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The English Derbj’ will be run at Epsom to-day, and this year’s race is of more than usual interest to Taranaki sports owing to the probability of Hector Gray having a mount. Latest English papers report that Craig an Eran and Lemonora, both hailing from A. Taylor's successful stable, are most favored for the race, thought Leighton, Monarch, Humorist, and Alan Breck are not without admirers. If Gray is up on Monarch the running of that colt will be followed with interest. There will be racing at Dunedin, Ellerslie, and Otaki this week. The Dunedin Racing Club winter meeting opens at Wingatui today, and on Friday and Saturday there will be racing at Ellerslie, Otaki and Wingatui. Good fields are carded all round, but the best of the jumping brigade will be seen up north. The Great Northern meeting is always a popular one with Taranaki sports, anti a good number have already left for Auckland.
Manawaponga and Crib are likely to carry tie Otago Steeplechase, run over three miles of very stiff country, and the first-named will probably strip the fitter of the pair. Staff Officer appears to be in a class of his own amongst the hurdlers likely to be seen out at the meeting, and Pit Prop, Clean Sweep.. Radial and Macduff should run prominently in the flat races. Hylans is said to have broken down.
J. Williamson landed first shot with Loyai Irish in Australia, and Absurd received another “boost.” Recent advices frojn Sydney stated that Loyal Irish was galloping splendidly, and no doubt the Auckland/crowd threw in for a good win.
Ngata is the most discussed candidate in tie Great Northern Steeples, but he will be busy keeping Master Strowan and Coalition at bay over the last hair mile. Mr. horses are probably the best schooled jumpers on our courses, and part of their training includes hill work. Possibly on tins account Ngata’s supporters do not fear the up and down course at Ellerslie. Asterina and Nursing Sister were doing good work before leaving for Auckland, and the former's chances of success appear the brighter. They say that Demos ran five furlongs in 1.3 one recent morning, and coming on top of Wanganui form this makes 'him out to be a hard horse to beat at Ellerslie in whatever he starts. Both Demos and Festivity are on the minimum in the Cornwall Handicap, and they promise to tickle up the northern cracks on Friday.
Mustard Pot has been sent up to Auckland, and will be a runner in the Members’ Handicap on the first d::y. With 9.12 he appears to be well cared for. and Asterina 5.13, Esthprtla 9.12, end Bindlc 9.13, should all holt/ the Canterbury horse safe.
Detroit stowed signs of lameness.after galloping this week, and is an unlikely runner at Otaki. Ted Penman will be represented by Goolwn and Lady Illma at the meeting. A little bird whispers that Chant Royal can go like the wind, so look out at Otaki.
The Volo—lncome double for Otaki is said to he quoted at a prohibitive “price.” Income will have the hardest part to do to land the second “leg.”
