NAVAL POLICY.
NECESSITY FOR STRONG FORCE. EMPIRE FLEET IN PACIFIC. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A conference of delegates representing branches of the Navy League opened to-day. The Hon. C. J. Parr telegraphed regretting that public engagements prevented his attending. He stated that in his judgment the Pacific Dominions should endeavor to secure a large Empire fleet based on Singapore to guard the Empire’s interests in the Pacific Ocean.
The main business of the conference was to discuss the new policy issued by the London office of the league. It was agreed that the New Zealand branches of the Navy League endorse the policy promulgated so far as it related to holding a conference of the Powers, but pending-the holding of such a conference the policy of the navy should remain unaltered, and it should pledge the league to advocate and assist by every means in its power the maintenance of a sea force which will be strong enough to guarantee to safety of the Empire.
