MINERS’ STRIKE:

TERMS UNACCEPTABLE. AN ALTERNATIVE WANTED. REFUSAL OF ARBITRATION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 30. Mr. Hodges declares that the miners will not accept the dictates of compulsory arbitration, preferring a voluntary arrangement with the owners, even though that deviates from their original purpose. They wanted |a settlement which would leave the men with a real living wage and the industry in the maximum state of efficiency. Owing to the Government’s mishandling the industry was bankrupt. There were some areas where official assistance should be continued till the end of the year. The Government had turned down the miners’ ideas of permanent peace and it was up to the Government to provide alternative proposals. The executive of the South Wales and Scottish Miners’ Associations have advised members to reject the Government’s proposals. Mass meetings of Lanarkshire and Forest of Dene miners voted for the rejection of the terms.
