. STRIKE FOR MORE PAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Owing to the substitution of the contract system on unemployment relief works on. the Sumner Road the men employed there have ceased work. The original conditions provided for day work at the rate of twelve shillings foxmarried men and single men with dependents, and • ten shillings for single men without dependents. This system has been changed to the contract system, the payments being equal for a normal day’s work. A factor in the refusal of the men to work under these conditions is stated to be that they met with accusations of “scabbing”. The award rates for general laborers in Canterbury are sixteen shillings a day and fifteen shillings a. day for those permanently employed by local i bodies
