ARBITRATION COURT.
GALLEY STAFFS ON STEAMERS. THE WAGES AWARD. . By Telegraph-—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. An award of the Court of Arbitration in. reference to the galley staffs employed on vessels of the Union Steam Ship Company has been filed. The wages fixed are as follow: Passenger steamers.—Chief cook (inter-colonial and foreign going), £2'2 10s per month; chief cook (steamers other than inter-colonial or foreign going), £2l; second cook, £l7; extra second cook, £l6; third cook, £l4; extra third cook, £l3; ship’s cook, £l6 10s; assistant ship’s cook, £l3; baker (intercolonial and foreign going steamers), £lB 10s; baker (other steamers), £l7 10s; second baker (where two or more are carried), £l5 10s; assistant baker, ,£l4 10s; butcher (inter-colonial and foreign going steamers), £l6; butcher (other steamers), £l5; second butcher (where two ore more are carried), £l4 10s; assistant butcher, £l3 10s; sculleryman, £l3. Cargo steamers. —Chief cook, £l7 10 s; second cook, £l3. Hours of labor are ten per day, and overtime will be paid for at the rate of two shillings per hour. The award will come into force from June 1, 1921, and remain in operation until March 1. 1922. Provision is made for a weekly halfholiday in a memorandum attached to the award. The Court says it had considerable difficulty in settling the wages clause, but in view of the fact that many of the company’s vessels trading to New Zealand were working on Australian articles it had been decided to adopt the scale fixed by the .recent Australian agreement.
