FAREWELL TO GOLFERS.

PRESENTATION TO MR. AND MRS, J. PATON. A pleasant function took place on the New Plymouth Golf Club’s links on Saturday afternoon, when the members farewelled Mr. and Mrs. J. Paton, who have been prominently associated with the club for many years, and who are leaving New Plymouth next month to reside at Ilowiek (Auckland). There was a very large attendance, including some of the members of the original* Nga Motu Club. During the afternooiti a mixed foursome match was played, after which Mr. and Mrs. Paton and thd.j guests were entertained at afternoon tea. During the afternoon Dr. E. A. Walker (president of the club) expressed th© deep appreciation of members for the notable service which Mr. and Mrs, Paton had given to the club, and ini voicing the regret at their departure he* asked them to accept a gift as tangible recognition of their work. The presentation ‘took the form of a gramaphon© in a handsome oak case. Referring to Mr. Paton’s activities in New Dr. Walker said he fulfilled the role of the ideal citizen, for he had always taken part in any movement concerning the welfare of the town. As a com* mitteeman on the tennis club he had for! many years rendered sterling service,while on the golf club committee he had done splendid work. He had been one of the originators of the Easter tournament, and though this event had mad© a small beginning Mr. Paton had taken a prominent part in organising it every, year, until now it was regarded as one of the principal tournaments in New Zealand. In many other directions Mr. Paton and Mrs. Paton had advanced th© welfare of the club, and their deparhir© would be a dietinct loss. In thanking members for their gift, Mr. Paton alluded to his association with the club extending over some twenty years, and remarked that he and Mrs. Paton did not require anything to remind them of their pleasant golfing days in New Plymouth. Mr. Paton mentioned that he first joined the club when it was on its original course on the South Road, which was now thickly, built over, and he traced the progress of the club from this beginning to ' Westown, and then to Waiwakaiho. At the conclusion three hearty cheefs were given for Mr. and Mrs. Paton.
