ASIA FOR THE ASIATICS.
Apparently there are good grounds for belief- that Japan is cultivating doser relations with China to the end of securing a combination of Orientals. According to a recent cable message from Tokio, protracted conferences have been held relative to the withdrawal of Japanese troops from Siberia, Korea and Shantung, also for settling outstanding matters in Manchuria. Japan seems to have come to the conclusion that, in face of the backing given by Britain and France to America over the Yap mandate, she has practically been abandoned by her white allies, and that her future depends on her ability to bring about a combination actuated by the doctrine of “Asia for the Asiatics.” This may be taken as a direct reply to a “white Australia” and to America’s anti-Japanese law. The report that Trotsky is going to Siberia to take charge of the negotiations with Japan and China regarding the operations of the Red Army towards the Pacific Coast may have been introduced -into the message for the deliberate purpose of associating Russia with the doctrine of isolation, but that need cause no anxiety. The disturbing factor is that Japan is being'driven to take retaliatory measures, and no one can foretell what will be their limit. That a powerful combination of Orientals may develop into a serious menace to the white races can be imagined, and if Russia and India act on the same doctrine so much the more will the danger be intensified. Japan may be regarded as the pivot on which such a moventent would turn, and the question is whether some practical way shall be found to remove the/pauses of Japan’s isolation. If this is not done, the next generation may be involved in a racial struggle that will affect the whole world. It would take some years to organise, train and equip the colored races for a great war —a war of vengeance that is too horrible to contemplate —but unless the necessary counteracting steps are taken, that is what the future may hold. That Japan is paving the way for Eastern dominance seems only too evident, and she •is doing so in a way that bids fair to assure success.
