FINED FOR HAVING OPIUM. Wellington, May 27. In the Magistrate’s Courts a fine of £45 was imposed on a water&ider, Rudolph Finderup, for being in possession of opium in a form suitable for smoking. Finderup was caught while attempting to sell opium, to a Chinaman WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL FINANCES. Wellington, May 27. A statement of the financial position of the City Council made by the Mayor last night showed that the gross overdraft amounted to £332,553, against which there were accounts in credit amounting to £158,456. After giving details of the accounts the Mayor said it would be absolutely clear to the council that prudence and care must be exercised. It was possible that the council might have to meet extraordinary expenditure which seemed threatening already. The Mayor also remarked' that he was pleased to notice that the chairmen of committees had already told the citizens who waited on them with requests for expenditure how necessary it was to practise economy.

MOVE TO UPSET POLL. Gisborne, Last Night. The magistrate (Mr. Barton) to-day had before him a petition for enquiry into the validity of the recent halfholiday poll, which resulted in Saturday being carried by one vote. It was "held that the poll must be declared void on the ground that the voting paper was not in accordance with the Act, in that it only provided -for a vote on the question of Thursday or Saturday, instead of on any working day of the week, and that the requisition asking for the poll did not comply with the Act. ATTEMPT TO REFLOAT KETCH. Gisborne, Last Night. The prospects of refloating the ketch Huanui, ashore on the Waikanae beach, are considered favorable. The stern has been turned towards the sea, but poor tides are hampering operations. The bodies of Captain Anderson and Captain Martin, who were drowned during the initial efforts at salvage, have not been recovered yet.
