MOUNTAIN ROAD.

DESIRE FOR IMPROVEMENT. A desire for the improvement of Mountain Road within the Stratford County boundaries, was expressed at Wednesday's meeting of the pounty Council by Cr. J. H. Thomas (South Riding). Cr. Thomas introduced the discussion by moving the following resolution:—“That a deputation consisting of two or three members of the council be deputed to wait on the Minister of Public Works for the purpose of endeavoring to raise a loan sufficient to complete the tar-sealing of Mountain Road in the North and South Ridings, and that the revenue from the Waipuku toll-gate be used to pay interest and sinking fund.” Cr. Thomas explained that his reason for bringing the matter up was that the road had got into a bad condition, and was worn out. The motion was defeated, Crs. O’Neill and Thomas being the only ones to vote for it. Cr, Thomas then moved: “That the Minister of Public Works be written to pointing out the condition of the road, and asking if he will consent to the raising of a loan against the toll-gate revenue.” This was seconded by Cr. O’Neill, and was also defeated, only Crs. Thomas, O'Neill and Jacobsen voting for it.
