The Rev. Palmer took his text from Genesis -28, 16 and 7, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not. And. he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven.” In the course of his sermon, the preacher said that when, for the first time, he entered the Te Henui church he was struck with the spirit of prayer and calm. The church, he said* was founded in 1845, by Bishop Selwyn, The Christians of those days had| brought their anxieties and their joys and happiness, into that lit-< tie church till the very timbers were charged with the power of bearing witness to their devotions. It was a great privilege to worship there under such influences, and they should try to make that sacred building a veritable house of God.
After the service, the Ladies’ Guild dispensed afternoon tea in the pariah hall, and in the evening an enjoyable serial was hf-ld.
