Sir Edward Carson has succeeded the late Lord Moulton as Lord of Appeal.

Dr. Rosen, German Minister at the Hague, has been appointed Foreign Min. ister.

The 'name of Mr. W. J. Chaney was inadvertently omitted from the 'executive appointed at Wednesdays meeting of the Taranaki Provincial War Relief Association. Mr. Chaney has been on the executive for a number of years.

The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Oliphant Stewart, aged 59, one of the first residents of Whakatane. He was born at Raglan, and had lived there since 1862.

.Mr., H. P. Hopkins, Christchurch manager of the Royal Insurance Company, and chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board, has been promoted to the position of general manager of the company in New Zealand. Acting under medical advice, Mr. Walford is taking Mrs. Wilford, who has been unwell for some time, for a sea trip to California and back, leaving by the Tahiti on Tuesday next. During Mr. Wilford’s short absence, Messrs. Sidey and Forbes will act for the Leader of the Liberal Party, and, during the short absence in Sydney of Mr. Sidey, Mr. Forbes will act alone. Mr. T. F. Beck, who has been foreman at the New Plymouth railway station for the past ten years, retires on superannuation at the end of this month. Mr. Beck has been in the service in New Zealand (for 35 years, and prior to that was guard on the Home railways for 12 years. Mr. Beck has always been looked upon as a conscientious and obliging public servant, commanding the respect of the public and his fellow public servants. In his retirement he will carry the best wishes for future happiness as a reward for a well-earned rest.

Mr. Thomas Humphries, late Sur-veyor-General, and for many years chief surveyor of Taranaki, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, England, in recognition of his long and valued service in the advancement of astronomical work in New Zealand. It was Mr. Humphries who introduced astronomy into the field work of the Dominion survey system, and he has been a consistent worker an this special field for the past 50 years, and is one of those who have/done so much to bring the system up to its present high standard. • *
