EGMONT-WANGANUi HUNT CLUB. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. CAMP GUARD WINS THE CUP. The Egmont-Waverley Steeplechase meeting was held on the Egmont Racing Club’s courts at Haw era, yesterday, in fine weather, and before a very good attendance. Mr. Morse had he course in splendid order, though it was slightly on the holding side after the heavy rain of the previous night. Sport throughout was of a very interesting order, the fields, save in the steeplechase events, being good, whilst tjiere were some exciting finishes. Speculation was quiet early in the day, but during the afternoon it livened up, and the totalisator staff (under Mr. F. Moore) had a busy time, handling £22,490, as compared, with £10.399 for the seven races of the last meeting, which was held in Waverley - in 1919. The Hunt Club Cup was won by Mr. G. Lupton’s Campfire gelding, Camp Guard, who was well ridden by A. McDonald, whilst the Maiden Steeplechase was won by the veteran New Plymouth horse Simple Sam. The principal flat race, the Ladies’ Bracelet, went to Whetoki, who just beat the New Plymouth owned Loekson. Mr. J. Hall’s Campfire gelding Mort Avis won two of the sprint events in fine style. Mr. A. Morse had charge of the barrier, and despatched his fields well, whilst Mr. R. Morrissey, in the judge’s box, hoisted his numbers promptly. The public had a very good day, first favorites paying dividends on six occasions (three firsts and three seconds), while three second favorites and two third favorites also paid first dividends.
Mr. W. McFarlane, the secretary, and his staff, are to be congratulated on the completeness of their ayrangements, the /last race being run right up to time, enabling patrons to catch their trains without trouble. Mr. V. B. Stratton, secretary of the Egmont Racing Club, was present, and lent valuable assistance. Mr. Ryan was they Government totalisator official, whilst Mr. Murchison was the stipendiary steward present, but found nothing to warrant an enquiry.
