FRIESIAN BREEDERS.

MEETING OF TARANAKI BRANCH. A meeting of the Taranaki branch of the Friesian Breeders' Association was held In Hawera on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. C. A. Marchant- presided over an attendance of nineteen members. A suggestion that Messrs. North, Green, Gill, and H. E, Johnson be nominated to the council of the New Zealand Friesian Breeders’ Association was supported by the meeting. 1 A letter is to be sent to Mr. R. Masters, j M.P., urging that payments for <mllk for i cheese-making be made on a basis of solids! contained therein. It had been proved by I factory records that the higher the quality of the milk- Xhe less cheese per pound of butter-fat could be made from it. Mr. V. Marx (Mangatoki) supported this bysaying that any cheese factory manager would Inform an inquirer that the yield of cheese per pound of butter-fat was higher at the beginning of the season than it was at the end, when the test was higher. The report on the Resting of milk for solids to be forwarded to Mr. R. Masters, M.P., was therefore approved. The meeting decided that an invitation be sent to the Minister of Agriculture to pay a visit to the Stratford Demonstration Farm, when members of the branch would confer with him on the question of testing milk for cheese-making for solids. On the motion of Messrs. Silby and J. J. Walker, it was also decided to invite the president of the Ayrshire Association (Mr. Webb) and the local member of the Ayrshire Council (Mr. Mills) to join the deputation to wait on the Minister if he could accept their invitation. Remits for the coming conference at Palmerston North were also discussed, and the chairman mentioned that there would be time enough up to the end of this month for members to bring up in remit form any question which they desired the conference to deal with. The chairman read the following remits to come before the conference: — 1. That in view of the large amount of work required of the secretary of the New Zealand Friesian Association, the resignation of the present secretary be asked for, and that applications for a whole-time secretary be called for. Further, that it be a recommendation to the council that they approach the sub-committee and draw up rules for the guidance of the secretary. 2. That an advanced Register of Merit be 1 established, and that the minimum required for qualification be double the standard required for a Certificate of Merit. 3. That it be a recommendation to the council that the funds of the association be utilised for the purpose of purchasing a bull of outstanding quality to be used for the benefit of breeders generally at some central farm under Government control. 4. That, in be a recommendation to tfe council that an oflicial demonstrator be appointed. Speaking on the last remit the chairman | said that a demonstrator was very much need-

cd. He had been present at a Jersey demonstration at Stra’tford at which Mr. Watson was the demonstrator, and the very good work that that gentleman was doing was needed in a like manner for their own breed. Mr. E. G. Betts brought before the meeting a suggestion which was put in tte form of the following remit for the conference: Thgt a live stock agency be established at the headquarters of the Friesian Association for the purpose of disposing of the surplus stud stock of Friesian breeders throughout New Zealand. On the motion of Mr. Henry Johnson, supported by the chairman, it was resolved to forward to the council a recommendation that meetings of tte council should be held quarterly if possible, and that the meetings be Held in the different centres, so that members of local branches will have an opportunity of meeting the members of the council and discussing questions of importance. Members expressed the wish that the branch would hold a field day and get some local man to act as demonstrator. Mr. H..

E. Johnson pointed out that a demonstration must be carried out on correct lines, and that the demonstrator timself must ba most carefully selected. The matter, however, was left over for a subsequent meeting. Considerable discussion arose over the new association rules as drawn up by the subcommittee, and it was finally decided that the new rules be not endorsed by the Taranaki branch and that they be referred back to the sub-committee for further consideration. With reference to the next meeting of the branch, the chairman was authorised to try and arrange the same for Inglewood, if sufficient inducement offered. Opportunity was taken to congratulate Mr. V. Marx on winning the Buckland Cup.—Stex.
