FREEZING INDUSTRY.
MANX WORKS CLOSED. SLACK TIMES EVERYWHERE. By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. Doleful reports are coming to hand regarding the state of the freezing industry. Operations are now slackening off considerably, and several works have already dosed down. The season is said to be one of the Worst experienced in the matter of %mall earnings, and slaughtermen are leaving the Dominion for Australia in arge numbers every week. Within a Few weeks the industry will be at a standstill, it is stated. Among works recently closed down, as far as slaughtering is concerned, are Onslow, FeildIng, Patea, Petone, Kakariki, Longbum, Imlay, and Whakatu. There were only five days’ killing in a fortnight at Dastiecliff, where the workers were reluced from 200 to 60. At Waitara, Vork is irregular, and at New Plymouth sonditions are reported much the same m at Waitara. At Masterton the staff tan been reduced from 281 in April to 104 a week ago. Short days are being worked in some instances. In Canterbury there is a slackening off, but coalitions in the South are better than in the North. From Auckland the position is reported anything but good, and the West field works are far from actual. At Southdown, Horotia, and Whakatane hands are being reduced, and 1 is expected all northern works will be Hosed down by the end of the month.
