OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Maori candidate is leading by a very big majority in the seaside queen carnival contest. A very large audience was present at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, when a specially good concert was given in aid of the Hibernian Carnival Committee. Misses Bennett (New Plymouth) vocalists and musicians, Master Winston McCarthy, the well-known juvenile comic singer, and Mr. G. Rae (piper), and Miss Rae (dancer) were specially engaged for the concert. The local talent, with the exception of Mrs. R. Campbell, were juveniles. The preliminaries in connection with the formation of a hydro-electric power board are being pushed on. The proposed nine-mile area of supply will take in practically all the county area (with the exception of the Rahotu Riding). Three hundred horse power will be developed. The Town Board will continue to carry out the construction work until the power board is constituted. The representation in the area will be sufficient to give the county the power of control and management. There is only one ambition of all parties, and that is to push on with all speed, and now the practical work will be commenced in earnest. The consulting engineer (Mr. Toogood) has been untiring in his efforts to bring the scheme to maturity. Some immigrants are getting back into this part of the country. They are very willing to work. Calves are so cheap that it does not pay the town ranger to impound them for fear that the animals will be left on the board’s staff hands. A number of dairy factories will close lor a few weeks at the end of May
