Frank Hodges (the miners’ leader) officially states that Mr. Smith and himself consider the recent unofficial proposals useless, and no proposal foi a meeting havel yet emanated from the Government. The miners’ executive will be summoned when the Prime Minister invites the parties to a conference, but no useful purpose could be served by a conference unless the Government lays down proposals providing a basis of set-tlement.SAus.-N.Z. THE OWNERS’ POSITION. MINERS MUST RE-OPEN DOOR. London, May 20. Official.—The Coal Owners’ Association denies that the owners have suggested any new scheme. The owners made a perfectly fair offer at the late conference, but the miners by demanding a pool, slammed the door aga'nst the Government and the owners. It was for the miners to re-open the door. BELGIAN HELP FOR STRIKERS. Brussels, May 20.
The Belgian miners have decided to contribute two hundred thousand francs, to assist the British miners.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
