MAGISTRATE’S COURT. May 20. Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided at the fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court to-day. George Leonard Young pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying an unregistered firearm. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs. RECENT FATAL COLLISION. Robert S. Death was charged, on the information of the police, with driving a horse and dray along Broadway South on the evening of April 19 without lights. Mr. Moss appeared for the defendant, and entered a plea of tyMr. Moss said the charge arose out of a recent collision whereby a motorist lost his life. It could not be suggested, in view of the evidence at the inquest, that the lack of lights on the dray caused the accident. Death had suffered considerably by the accident, and had been already severely punished. Mr. Moss submitted that the case was hardly one for further punishment, and a light fine would meet the case.
In reply to the Magistrate, Sergeant Dale said he agreed with the Coroner’s verdict.
The Magistrate said he did not doubt that defendant realised his position, and thought that he had had sufficient punishment. The case would be treated as an ordinary one, and defendant would be fined £1 and costs. A DOUBLE OFFENCE.
Allen Close was charged, on the information of the borough inspector, with riding a bicycle on the footpath in Regan Street, and also with riding without lights at the same time. The Magistrate commented on the danger of such a practice, and expressed the hope that the case would be a lesson to the defendant and a warning tothe public. Defendant was fined £1 and costs on each charge. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was entered for the plaintiff, by default, in each of the following civil cases:—Margaret Gallagher (Mr. King) v. The annual concert arranged by the Stratford A. and P. Association, which is looked forward to as being one of the principal musical events of the year in Stratford, attracted a large audience at the Town Hall last night, and the programme, which was of a varied nature, received an appreciative reception. In practically all the items the artists were recalled, and the members of the audience demonstrated their appreciation by the ready applause which they gave the performers. Miss Ruby Curran, a pianiste of high attainments, opened the programme with a concert study by Moskonski, and during the rest of the evening she ably filled the part of accompanist to the other artists. Her rendering of the extremely difficult solo piece was so excellent that it was rather a pity she was not included on the programme again. Madame Ivo Symes and Mr. George Swan sang a pretty duet in character, “How’s My Boy,” which they had to respond to with an encore. Madame Symes was also heard to advantage in “Waiata Maori” (Alfred Hill), and for her encore she was heard to advantage in Gounod’s “Ave Maria,” played as a violin and harp solo. Mr. Harold Roberts (baritone) interpreted splendidly “King’s Minstrel,” “Youth,” “Dreams of the Past,” and “Little Irish Girl.” Miss Dorothy Hughes Johnson, a young violinist, received splendid applause for her fine rendering of the difficult “Deuieme Mazurka,” and to this item she responded with “Lessons with a Fan.” In the
second portion of the programme she sang very effectively “Mate of Mine,” with a violin obligato, responding with “O Lovely Night.” Mrs. Hughes Johnson, who* holds the distinction of being the champion harp player of Australasia, received an excellent reception for her rendering of “Pitzcato,” and, in the second half, “Un Songe,” responding with “The Rosary.” She also assisted in a duet with Mrs. Hughes Johnson and with violin obligato for one of Madame Symes’ songs. Miss Audrey Hughes Johnson contributed several beautiful classical dances, earning the special praise of the audience with “The Love Bird” and “The Dying Swan,” having to respond with other dances. Mr. George Swan, the humorist of the party, soon made himself popular with the audience, and had to give numerous encores to his items. His recitations, “Levinsky at the Wedding,” “Snorkins,” “Tim Finnegan’s Goat,” and other pieces proved to the liking of the audience, who accorded him unstinted applause. GENERAL. A land agent’s license was granted Mr. W. H. H. Young at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The Egmont (Ladies) Hockey Club and the Stratford Hockey Club have arranged a grand dance, to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, May 26, in aid of the funds of the two clubs.
