POLICEMEN KILLED. A PATROL AMBUSHED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 20, 11.’5 p.m. London, May 20. Sergeant Butler was fatally shot while returning to Newport barracks. Corporal Hill was fatally shot when returning to Cork barracks, after bidding good-night to a girl. A police patrol was ambushed at Letterkenny and Constable Carter was fatally shot and Sergeant Maguire was wounded.
RIOT IN BELFAST. TRAGEDY AT A FARM. London, May 19. Musicians returning from a vocalist demonstration through the Sinn Fein quarter of Belfast were fired upon and a fierce riot ensued. The police fired a volley killing an ex-soldier and wounding a civilian. Sinn Feiners shot dead Joseph Haydon, a farmer who was in bed at Rock, near Dungannon and fatally stabbed his brother James.
